Effective Comics Narration with Rivkah LaFille

Internal monologues are a mainstay of comics…but there’s a time when they help the story and a time when they get in the way. So how do you know the difference? In this workshop with graphic novelist Rivkah LaFille, we will discuss showing vs telling in a visual as well as narrative context, transform blah internal narration into something with true personality and insight into your narrator’s mind, and deciding when to ditch the internal narration altogether and let actions speak louder than words.
Rivkah LaFille is the author/illustrator of the YALSA-nominated series, STEADY BEAT, as well as the forthcoming CREATIVE WRITING WITH MISS MARY MAC from First Second (Fall 2025) and FIVE WISHES from Candlewick (Fall 2026). She has been teaching the craft of making great comics for over twenty years, including the Kids Comics Intensive at Kids Comics Unite.
