Feedback with a Pro is a new type of event we’re introducing in Kids Comics Studio in 2025. These will be 1.5 to 2-hour live feedback sessions with an agent or editor who specializes in graphic novels, usually held on Saturdays.
You’ll have the chance to submit your work in advance, and get feedback from them during the group discussion on Zoom. You’ll be able to ask questions too!
We are planning to host at least three, and possibly four, Feedback with a Pro sessions throughout the year. Each session will have a different agent or editor offering feedback.
The first Feedback with a Pro session will be on Saturday, January 25th, with Union Square & Co. graphic novel editor Chris Duffy.
Perfect timing to get feedback before Pitchfest submissions open in late February!
In fact, because the first Feedback with a Pro session leads into Pitchfest so well, the type of content you’ll be able to submit will basically be what’s required for a Pitchfest submission:
- Title and short synopsis
- 2-4 sample spreads (they could be pencil sketches; they don’t need to be final art as required for Pitchfest)
- A short creator bio
As a Studio member, you’ll be able to submit your work for the first Feedback with a Pro session between January 11th and 17th or so. We’ll provide a template for you.
The amount of time we get to discuss your work during the session will depend on how many Studio members submit work for review, but we’ll spend at least 5 minutes per submission, and possibly more.
The approach we’ll ask Chris to take on feedback for the first Feedback with a Pro session will be similar to what we tell the Pitchfest judges:
- If this work came into your inbox as a submission, what would your initial reaction be? (We’re emulating what’s happening in the real world, where agents and editors have so many submissions that they’re often making split second judgements.)
- If you would want to see more, why? What are the strengths of the piece? Would you have any suggestions for improvement?
- If it would probably be a pass, what would be the reasons? What do you think the creator could focus on to improve?
What you’ll be able to submit for future Feedback with a Pro sessions may be similar to this one, or might be different. For instance, we could possibly focus on reviewing your online portfolio, or script excerpts, or some other aspect of your work. We’ll discuss with you what would be most helpful!
