Coloring Like a Comic Artist with Rori de Rien

This workshop will cover:

  • How to use your non-comics experience to start making confident decisions about color 
  • Coloring as storytelling 
  • Practical color theory basics
  • Formulating “Limited Palettes” 
  • Building up to full-color 
  • Using coloring styles that complement lineart

Rori! is a cartoonist and illustrator from St. Louis who loves history, myth, and misfits. She has authored several independent comics and contributed to such anthologies as Little Earthquakes and Femme Magnifique. A multi-styled illustrator, she has worked with clients ranging from Harley Davidson to Harvard University. She created the women’s history illustration series #100Days100Women and drew the featured illustrations for the Missouri History Museum exhibits Beyond the Ballot (celebrating women’s suffrage) and Coloring StL (celebrating St. Louis architecture).  Rori’s upcoming graphic novels (working as the team of Gibson & Rori) include Wuthering Heights from Andrews McMeel (2025), and History Comics: Titanic from First Second (2027).
