Remaining Pieces
In a world defined by symbols, Kwiat is a lotus creature navigating the aftereffects of her mother's death. To cope with her loss, she decides to migrate, hoping that a change of scenery will ease the weight of her grief. However, she soon discovers that her environment, and her own physical form, are tied to her emotions, no matter how far she travels. Through encounters with others who understand the silent language of grief, Kwiat begins to realize that her isolation doesn't have to be permanent. It's a story about the complicated transition from denial to acceptance, in which a tightly closed bud finally learns to exist in a world that has changed forever.

100My Why:
I started this project because when I lost my mother three years ago, I realized grief isn’t a straight line; it’s a whole landscape you have to navigate. This story is my way of processing the urge to run away from pain, only to realize that acceptance is about learning to “bloom” right where you are. This is also a way for me to remind myself of everything I have learned since she passed away. It is a tribute to her, a way to show others they aren't alone in the 'uncomfortable' stages, and my own way of saying goodbye.

I’m Valentina Carvajal, a Colombian artist and graphic design student based in Missouri. Born in Bogotá, I’m drawn to melancholic imagery and the language of surrealism. My work uses illustration to give tangible form to heavy emotions and the spaces we struggle to name.
