Fabula
Fabula is the city of storytellers, powered by fabulae: archetypes that bubble up from the earth. Everyone uses stories to maintain their world, but for some reason, Bianca can't. She finds a magic bird that makes stories for her, only to stick out even more. The city’s fabulae are dwindling, and Bianca and her friends embark to find a solution. On their travels they learn the origins of fabulae. They return to a city that has collapsed. Those in power have retreated into a giant machine powered by captured birds. Bianca’s bird is taken, and she must find the courage to tell her story with her own voice. She joins her friends and the remaining storytellers to tell the true story of Fabula, breaking free and rebuilding their city.

Creativity is a superpower that all human beings have, but many modern technologies incentivize against creative development. I wanted to write a fun, fantastical story that inspires kids to feel excited by the open-ended freedom and possibility of making things, with nothing but their own voice and imagination.
I want them to see the storytellers creating in this book, and feel empowered knowing that they themselves already have that power in real life. Even if they feel like they can't at first, they are still part of Fabula. They can make things out of thin air and use the amplification of creativity to tell the truth about who they are, what they perceive and experience, and carve out authentic space for themselves.
